One man was killed and three others injured early Sunday when an unknown number of assailants opened fire from a silver SUV following a fight at a Downtown Memphis club.

About an hour after midnight, Memphis police officers saw and broke up a large fight at The Den, a music, poetry and comedy club in a space formerly occupied by Hattiloo Theatre in the 600 block of Madison in the Edge District. As officers dispersed the crowd, gunfire erupted, the bullets striking and killing a young man at the scene.

Three other people were shot and transported in non-critical condition, according to the Memphis Police Department.

Darius Clayton, the owner of The Den, posted a statement on Facebook about the shooting and identified the man killed as Jon Booker, a photographer and videographer.

"I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jon Booker who lost his life in the Edge district last night," Clayton said in the statement. "It is always a sad occasion to wake up the next morning to know that another life has been senselessly taken due to gun violence in Memphis."

Clayton said local hip-hop artist Carlos Bean hosted a performance and birthday party at the club when an altercation began inside and security broke it up and escorted all those involved in the fight outside the club.

He said once outside some of those involved in the fight got in a SUV and opened fire. Booker was shot and pronounced dead on the scene.

"We are a resilient city and, together, we can strive to make it better," Clayton said. "We cannot shut down , shy away or move the problems facing our citizens and communities. We must stand and face it squarely. Without spaces like The Den, we cannot contribute to the culture and legacy of Memphis."

Police said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
