A man died after he reportedly went to pick up his girlfriend, who said she was being held against her will Friday night.

According to an affidavit, 21-year-old Justin Mays is charged with murder and aggravated kidnapping in the death of 24-year-old Pierre Cheer.

The incident occurred just after 10:30 p.m. in an apartment building in the 6900 block of Stone Ridge off of Riverdale Road, according to Memphis Police.

The affidavit says Cheer's girlfriend went to see Mays for about an hour, but called her boyfriend after arriving to say Mays had become aggressive and would not let her leave the apartment. The woman told police Mays grabbed her by the arm.

When Cheers arrived, Mays let him into the apartment, according to the affidavit, but the two men started arguing.

Cheers told Mays, "You're going to have to shoot me, because I ain't leaving without her," according to the affidavit.

Mays then fired one shot, the affidavit said, which struck Cheers.

Police found Cheers on the ground partially inside the front door of the apartment. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Mays was arrested at the apartment. No bail has been set.
