A 52-year-old woman is dead after she was shot while driving through Orange Mound, and a person standing on the street was hit by the gunfire, police said.

Police responded to the shooting at 11:33 p.m.Tuesday in the 700 block of David Street.

A man told officers that he was a passenger in the victim's car when they noticed a car following them as they drove east on Douglass toward Haynes.

As they approached Haynes, another vehicle pulled parallel to their car and shots were fired.

The man said the woman pulled over and jumped into the passenger seat to let him drive. He drove to the 700 block of David and called police.

The woman, identified by family members as Telisa Cain, was taken to the Regional Medical Center, where she died Wednesday morning.

"We are devastated," said her brother Rev. Allen Richardson. "We lost our brother to a shooting in 1997. Now (we) have two catastrophic deaths in our family."

Richardson said Cain was the mother of four children.

While police were investigating Cain's shooting, they received a call about a second shooting victim at St. Francis Hospital. Police said a person standing near Douglass and Haynes was injured when the suspects opened fire on Cain's car.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.
