A man who died early Monday after he was shot outside a nightclub became the city's 200th homicide victim this year.

Deangelo Gray, 20, was shot around 12:15 a.m. outside the James Lounge club at 3172 Summer Ave., near Pope and Hillcrest.

Police said Gray was found on the sidewalk on Hillcrest with a gunshot wound.  He was taken to the Regional Medical Center where he later died.

The preliminary investigation showed that there was some type of disturbance outside the club that escalated into a fight, said police spokesman Louis Brownlee in an email Monday.

"As patrons and the security officer began to head back into the lounge, the complainant heard a shot from the area alongside the lounge. He went to investigate and located the victim," Brownlee said. "Further investigation revealed that a physical fight that occurred in front of 658 Hillcrest. This is an ongoing investigation."

James Lounge has been a trouble spot for police over the last few years.

Last May, the club was shut down by court order after police responded to more than 60 reports of shootings, stabbings and drugs there. It is not known when the club reopened.

Monday's fatal shooting there marks the grim milestone of the 200th homicide of the year.
