One person was found dead early Thursday after authorities responded to a shooting call at Lauderdale and Vance.

Memphis police and fire personnel responded to the call around midnight.

Memphis police spokesman Louis Brownlee said a 39-year-old man was found lying in the street unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released.

"The preliminary investigation revealed that a black vehicle drove up and a male got out of the vehicle,"  Brownlee said. "The male then walked over to the victim and robbed the victim. After (the suspect) took the victim's wallet, the suspect shot the victim multiple times."

The homicide came amid a bloody year in Memphis. Police said Thursday morning's shooting was homicide 225.

A store, church and the Cornelia Crenshaw Branch of the Memphis Public Library sit near the intersection of Vance and Lauderdale. A Memphis police camera is positioned on a pole near the intersection and the store also has surveillance cameras. Brownlee said there is video associated with the investigation.

Thomas Scott, 35, who lives in the neighborhood, said he heard that someone was killed overnight.

“We’ve got to come together and try to quit all this foolishness,” he said.

News of the shooting also drew concern from a woman who said she catches the bus near the crime scene to go to her warehousing job.

“I catch the bus at 4:48 every morning to go to work in the same area,” said Tamrecha Jackson, 40.

No one was in custody and the investigation was ongoing. Anyone with information can call CrimeStoppers at 901-528-CASH (2274).
