Memphis police are investigating after a man shot late Monday night in an apparent domestic situation died Tuesday, officials said.

The incident began around 10:30 p.m. at a residence in the 4100 block of Sassafras River Drive in Southeast Memphis, police said. Responding officers found a 48-year-old man suffering from several gunshots on the floor of the laundry room. He told police his girlfriend shot him after they argued.

Police found the woman nearby and took a gun from her purse. A 19-year-old man, who is the son of the woman who allegedly pulled the trigger, told police that he and the victim got into an argument after he took his mother's car without permission. The son told police that the victim punched him in the face, sparking the argument.

The woman told police that the victim went and got a pistol and shot at her son, leading her to open fire. The son said he didn't see the victim with a weapon, police said. Police found several shell casings at the home, but no weapons other than the one the woman had in her purse, officials said.
