Man charged in fatal shooting at Boost Mobile store

A  22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a clerk at the Boost Mobile store in Whitehaven on Monday.

Damon Johnson has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Rashed Awwad.

Police said around 6 p.m. Monday, Awwad was working at the cellphone store at 1722 Winchester when four men came in regards to a phone that was being fixed. One of the men and Awwad got in an argument, according to an arrest affidavit.

Awwad told the men to come back without the man. The men left the store and Awwad went outside to smoke. The men were still in front of the store and the argument continued, police said.

As the argument progressed, police said Johnson pulled out a gun and shot Awwad several times. The suspect and the other men fled on foot.

Awwad died at the Regional Medical Center.

Police said several witnesses identified Johnson from a police photo lineup and the shooting was captured on surveillance video.

Johnson was arrested Wednesday. He told investigators that he shot  Awwad because he was afraid the victim had a gun, according to an affidavit.

Johnson remains in jail on a $150,000 bond. No other arrests have been made in the shooting.
