1 dead, teen injured in shooting near University of Memphis

Memphis police said a man was shot and killed and his 16-year-old passenger was injured after someone opened fire on their vehicle early Thursday morning in a East Memphis neighborhood near the University of Memphis.

Crime

Police responded to the shooting shortly after 12 a.m. on Park Avenue and Goodman Road in the Sherwood Forest neighborhood. The victims were found shot inside a black SUV.

The driver, whose name and age have not been released by police, was pronounced dead on the scene. The 16-year-old boy was taken to the Regional Medical Center with a gunshot wound. He was reported to be in critical condition.

Police said the SUV hit a utility pole at Park and Echles, crossed lanes of traffic and came to a stop at Park and Goodman.

The crash knocked out power to traffic lights at Park and Echles. Memphis Light Gas and Water crews repaired the damaged pole by 7 a.m.

Police are searching for the suspects and no arrests had been made.
