Father charged after 3-year-old kills himself in accidental shooting

Police have charged the father of a 3-year-old boy who died after accidentally shooting himself Saturday with the father's handgun. 

Kash Sharp, 3, suffered a fatal gunshot wound July 8 at the New Horizon apartments.

Cortez Wilkerson is charged with reckless homicide, felony drug possession, felony weapon possession and possession of drug paraphernalia, according to Memphis police spokesman Louis Brownlee.

His son, who has been identified as Kash Sharp, was found by police lying on the walkway when they responded to a shooting call about 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the 3600 block of Duchess in the New Horizon Apartments.

The child was transported to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital and later pronounced dead.

Brownlee said Wilkerson told officers the child had shot himself with Wilkerson's gun. Following an investigation, Wilkerson was charged.
