A Memphis man has been arrested after allegedly shooting and killing his ex-girlfriend in front of their child, according to an arrest affidavit.

James Nelson

James Nelson, 41, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Keysha Caldwell.

Caldwell was found inside a home around 8:45 p.m. Friday night in the 1400 block of Gaither.

Caldwell was found lying on the floor with a gunshot wound to the head, according to an affidavit. Police found a .40-caliber Smith and Wesson in the home.

Police said the victim and the suspect have a daughter together and the child told investigators that her father shot her mother after a fight, according to an affidavit.

Another witness told police that the victim was shot as she was leaving the home, according to the affidavit.

Nelson was taken into custody and in a statement to police he told investigators that he did not kill his former girlfriend. He told police Caldwell was trying to take the gun from him when it discharged.

In addition to the murder charge, Nelson was also charged with being a felon in possession of a handgun. In 1996, he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter.

Nelson remains in jail. He will be in court Monday.
