Relatives: 1-year-old girl killed in Southeast Memphis has family ties to slain 2-year-old Laylah Washington
A 1-year-old girl fatally shot Friday morning in Southeast Memphis has a family connection to Laylah Washington, the toddler who was shot to death in June in Hickory Hill, relatives said.
Crystal Washington, the aunt of 2-year-old Laylah, said her oldest daughter and the 1-year-old girl, Robin Keefer, are sisters.
"It was devastating," Washington said of hearing that Robin was killed months after Laylah's death which remains unsolved with a reward of more than $20,000 for information.
Robin's great-aunt, Wanda Keefer said she is still in disbelief after getting a phone call at work that Robin, who she described as happy and sweet, had been shot in the head.
"My heart just dropped," she said.
Authorities have detained a person in Robin's shooting.
Earlier, police were looking for a 24-year-old man who was seen fleeing the scene. He was wanted for questioning.
Robin was shot around 7:30 a.m. at an apartment complex in the 3500 block of Mendenhall off Winchester.
A resident, Robin Smith, said she didn’t know the family but was saddened to hear about the shooting.
“I work with children and you never want to see anything like this happen to any child,” Smith said.
Police blocked streets throughout the city as they transported the child to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital where she later died.
This year, 13 children under 18 have been killed in the city including 3 shot and killed last month.
"She was a good baby, just like a little angel," Wanda Keefer said.
